If you are keen to shake up your nightly entertainment and break away from the couch and your regular television schedule, you might want to consider booking tickets to go to the theatre. Whilst, obviously, the big budget, prestigious productions staged in the theatrical districts of London, Paris or New York would obviously rank high on your list of preferences, don't disregard the smaller shows performed at your local theatre; many of these are excellent as well.
Selecting a play or musical to go and see should not be too difficult, especially if you already have a working knowledge of the theatre. You might choose to watch a production because it features an actor you like, or because you like the play itself. If you aren't familiar with the stage, however, you might find the process a little trickier.
Scan the list of current productions and keep your eyes open for familiar features. Perhaps you'll find a play starring your favourite actress from the television, for example – if you do, remember to leave your Canon Eos at home; flash photography isn't usually allowed in theatres.
If you can't find anything to relate to, do an internet search and read a selection of reviews. In addition to those written by the critics, look for pieces written by ordinary theatre-goers, like yourself, and take this advice to heart.
If you aren't au fait with the world of the theatre, selecting a production to go and watch might be a little difficult. However, with a little investigation and some carefully directed reading of reviews, you shouldn't find the business to complex.
